Halting human driven extinctions of the species sharing the planet with us is among the greatest environmental challenges of our time. A groundbreaking new research reveals a solution to save more than half of these doomed species, while slowing climate breakdown: Protect just 30 percent of tropical lands. That’s exactly what Endangered Species International (ESI) has been doing for the last 14 years, protecting and restoring nature in the tropics including over 280 endangered animals. ESI supports the creation of effective natural protected areas in the tropical regions, in Latin America, Africa and southeast Asia. Natural areas are conserved through a wide range of mechanisms, from government designated protected areas to multiple use land management such as community conservancies and other effective area based conservation measures. ESI also acquires and managed natural areas in the tropics for the benefits of all.
Numbers matter
While our societies spend $1.8 trillion per year (2008) to make arms to kill, protecting the world's most endangered species from extinction and conserving their beautiful habitats would cost only $76 billion per year. However, our world spends only a fraction of that crucial spending. The United Sates spends only $7 billion per year on the cause, and countries with more biodiversity and large number of threatened species spend very little. Brazil is home to 13% of all life on Earth, but its conservation budget is merely $180M. Congo is home of 12% percent of all life on Earth, and spends less than $0.5M for conservation. Your support to ESI and our work in the tropics is therefore more important than ever. Every dollar counts and makes a difference. Please give to ESI today - your donation is crucial to saving wildlife and their habitat.
